How to read border wait times

A published wait is a dated observation. It does not guarantee how long you will wait when you arrive.

Updated readings with their original times

Sources are checked every 30 minutes. The site automatically uses available reports; providers may publish less often. Crossing pages and comparisons check their display and report ages every minute, and history every five minutes, while the tab is visible. Historical snapshot mode stays fixed.

The source observation time and retrieval time are separate. Old, unreadable or future-dated readings are identified; retrieving them again does not reset their age.

A future-dated report is excluded until its observation time is reached. It is then reassessed on each visit using the source time: recent for up to 60 minutes, older after that. Other data-quality checks still apply. In history, this rule is evaluated at each retrieval time.

Compare like with like

CBSA reports are used for travel into Canada; CBP reports are used for travel into the United States. General traveller waits into Canada are not treated as a NEXUS lane measurement.

A numeric comparison requires at least two usable numbers in the same direction and category. “No delay reported” remains a qualitative statement and is not converted to zero minutes.

Partial coverage without invented estimates

Hemmingford–Mooers and Lacolle Route 221–Overton Corners have data limitations explained on their crossing pages. A missing reading does not mean the crossing is closed or travel is prohibited.

History shows saved readings. Identical readings are not independent source publications. These data alone do not establish a best time, forecast, beneficial detour or fastest crossing.

Reading at a dataset’s reference time is retrospective. A value that was recent then does not necessarily describe current traffic.

No invented pattern

This reading retains 4849 retrievals by crossing/direction/lane, including retrievals without a matching record. Repeated retrievals are not independent source publications. No typical wait, best crossing time or forecast is inferred.
